Michael Mary Sweeney, SCN

Michael Mary Sweeney, SCN, 83, a native of Lexington, Ky., died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on November 28, 2008. She had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 61 years.

Sister Michael Mary served in the health care apostolate in Kentucky, Ohio and Arkansas for 41 years. In Kentucky, Sister served at Mount Saint Agnes Sanitarium from 1949-51; at St. Joseph Infirmary from 1963-66; at Our Lady of Peace Hospital from 1969-75; at Nazareth Infirmary, Nazareth, Ky., from 1975-81; and at Nazareth Motherhouse from 1981-90. Sister served in the apostolate of prayer at Nazareth Motherhouse from 1990-99, and at Nazareth Home/Maria Hall from June 1999 till her death.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Jo Sweeney, SCNA, who is a resident at Nazareth Home; Jewell Sweeney, a sister-in-law who resides at Stone Mountain, GA, and her Sisters in the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

Christiana Hofmann, SCN

Christiana Hofmann, SCN, 83, a native of Louisville, Ky., died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on November 24, 2008. She had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 59 years.

Sister Christiana served in the apostolate of elementary education as teacher and librarian in Tennessee, Maryland and Kentucky for 21 years. Sister served as Pastoral Minister in Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Greenwood, Miss., from 1979-2007. Sister served as a Volunteer at Nazareth Home from September 2007 until October 2008 when she became a resident there.

Survivors include three brothers: Robert Hofmann of Louisville, Ky., Donald Hofmann of Stephensport, Ky., and William Hofmann of Brandenburg, Ky.; two sisters, Ruth Ann Ande of Bradenton, Fla., and Rosemary Brewer of Louisville, Ky.; and her Sisters in the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

Barbara Dwyer, SCN

Barbara Dwyer, SCN, 93, a native of Port Jervis, N.Y., died on November 22, 2008, at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky. She had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 32 years. Sister Barbara transferred to the Congregation from the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy, Charleston, S.C., in 1976.

As a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, Sister Barbara served as librarian at Bethlehem High School, Bardstown, Ky., from 1977-87. After a Sabbatical at the University of Kentucky, Sister served as Chaplain’s Assistant at Jefferson County Jail in Louisville from 1987-99. Sister became a resident at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., in April 2000.

Survivors include one brother, Daniel J. Dwyer and a niece, Barbara Dwyer-Anderson, both of Port Jervis, N.Y., and her Sisters in the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

Margaret Maginnis, SCN

Margaret Maginnis, SCN, formerly Sister John Emily Maginnis, 94, a native of Faustwell, Pa., died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on November 6, 2008. She had entered the SCN Congregation from Morganfield, Ky. Sister Margaret had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 75 years.

Sister Margaret served in the apostolate of health care as a lab technician, technologist, and lab supervisor in Kentucky and Washington, D.C. for 38 years. After acquiring a Master’s degree at Kent School of Social Work in Louisville, Ky., she served as a social worker for Catholic Charities, director of social service at Nazareth Home, and in parish outreach. In retirement, Sister Margaret lived in Versailles, Ky., and later served in the apostolate of prayer at Nazareth, Ky. She became a resident at Nazareth Home in July 2008.

Survivors include a sister, Ernestine Donnelly; and a niece, Sheila Lowery, both of Jeffersonville, Ind.; and another niece, Cathy Silva of Elk Grove, Calif.; and her Sisters in the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, particularly her companions of many years, Sisters Kathleen Mary Bohan and Eileen Mary Meyer.

Sheila Maria Lewis, SCN

Sheila Maria Lewis, SCN, 84, a native of Lexington, Ky., died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on November 5, 2008. She had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 61 years.

Sister Sheila Maria served in the apostolate of health care in Nursing Service, Nursing Education and Chaplaincy in Kentucky, Ohio, Florida and Washington, D.C. for 46 years.

Survivors include cousins, Trudy and Julian Dwyer; and Linda Lyons, all of Lexington, Ky.; and her Sisters in the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, especially her devoted surrogates, Sisters Mary Susann Gobber and Elaine Puthoff.
